The University of Kentucky’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is internationally recognized for its pioneering research into Alzheimer’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. After decades of continuous use, the facility required a comprehensive transformation to support evolving research methodologies while creating an environment that better reflects the Center’s world-class mission.

‍

Omni Architects led a major renovation of the original 1979 building, reimagining more than 31,000 square feet of research, office, collaboration, and public space while also replacing the aging exterior envelope across portions of both the original and expansion buildings. The design reorganizes laboratory and support spaces to enhance functionality, collaboration, and flexibility for future research initiatives.

‍

A defining feature of the renovation is the dramatic transformation of the building’s exterior. The original precast concrete façade was replaced with a custom high-performance curtainwall system that floods the interior with natural daylight, creating a healthier and more inspiring workplace for researchers, clinicians, staff, and visitors. Offices positioned along the building perimeter with floor-to-ceiling interior glazing allow daylight to penetrate deep into the building, fostering transparency, connectivity, and occupant wellbeing.

‍

The renovated Sanders-Brown Center presents a contemporary identity that reflects the institution’s leadership in aging research while providing a flexible, light-filled environment designed to support scientific discovery for decades to come.
