NKU’s University Center Approaches Final Phase of Transformation

A Bold New Front Door to Campus Takes Shape

A dramatic transformation is underway at Northern Kentucky University’s University Center—a project led by Omni Architects that reimagines the campus’s most prominent and public-facing interior spaces. Often the first stop for prospective students and visitors, the University Center serves as the symbolic “front door” to NKU. Its renovation is designed to reflect the University’s identity, spirit, and forward momentum.

At the center of the transformation is a striking new three-story luminaire, suspended within the building’s multi-story atrium. Inspired by NKU’s iconic flame, the sculptural fixture is composed of abstracted, faceted forms and backlit with programmable LED lighting that gently flickers like fire. Visually and symbolically, it anchors the atrium as a beacon of NKU’s energy and ambition.

To counter the building’s formerly dim Brutalist interior, bright yellow and white phenolic panels now wrap structural concrete and extend through the space, modernizing its appearance and amplifying natural and ambient light. Additional updates include a curving social bench and reception area that soften the angular geometry and encourage informal interaction.

The renovation also extends to the Otto M. Budig Theater and nearby classrooms, where bold brand colors, sleek finishes, and dynamic forms carry the design language forward—creating a vibrant, cohesive experience for all who use the space.

With construction approximately 95% complete, the new University Center is already redefining the campus experience. Omni Architects is proud to support NKU’s ongoing evolution and commitment to student success through design that inspires connection, creativity, and pride.
