NKU celebrates Herrmann Science Center Expansion topping out

The Northern Kentucky University Herrmann Science Center expansion reached a major milestone in October with a topping out ceremony, marking the placement of the structure’s final—and highest—steel beam.

A long-standing tradition in the construction industry, a topping out ceremony celebrates the progress of a project and recognizes the skill and dedication of the construction team. The event also symbolizes good fortune and continued safety for the building and all who will use it.

Following custom, an evergreen tree and an American flag were placed on the final beam—representing growth, good luck, and pride—before it was hoisted into place. Members of the project team, including representatives from Northern Kentucky University, Omni Architects, and the Skanska Construction crew, signed the beam before watching it rise to its permanent position atop the new structure.

The expansion of the Herrmann Science Center, originally designed by Omni Architects in 1997, continues a decades-long partnership with NKU to advance teaching, research, and collaboration in the sciences.
