First African Kanisa Apartment Renovation and Restoration
Lexington Kentucky

This project involved the renovation/rehabilitation of the Douglass School building, including a new addition, to provide 59 apartments for the elderly. The Douglas School is an important landmark to the African-American community of Lexington, but had fallen into severe disrepair. Omni maintained and restored many of the historical features of the existing building, including large windows, tall ceilings and terrazzo flooring in the main corridor. The addition is scaled more to traditional housing standards, yet remain in context with the school building.

All of the apartments have a self-contained living room, kitchen/dining area, bathroom, and bedroom. Other features include central laundry facilities, rental office, and community seating space. Part of the community seating space is in a two-story section that was once part of the gymnasium where details of the stage proscenium were recreated to bring back memories to residents, some of which had attended the Douglas School. Within the front entry hall , trophy cases were restored to house memorabilia from the school.
