Campus Recreation Center - Northern Kentucky University
Highland Heights, Kentucky

Originally constructed in 1984, the Albright Health Center had become obsolete in its ability to provide NKU’s students with the recreation and fitness amenities they expect or desire. The university made the decision to renovate and expand the existing structure, with the goal of creating a light-filled, airy, inviting, transparent, active, energetic and exciting space.

To achieve this goal, Omni teamed with Cannon Design, a firm noted for its collegiate rec center designs across the nation. Through a collaborative design process – which included 12 focus group sessions with students and faculty to find out what amenities they’d like to see in the new building – the Omni/Cannon team developed a design response that is transformative in terms of its impact on the existing structure.

The new Student Recreation Center includes two artificial surfaced, lighted intramural fields and a building expansion of approximately 110,000 GSF that is targeting LEED Silver certification.
