st. mark catholic elementary and middle school

Omni’s challenge was to incorporate the existing stone church (1908) and elementary school (1966) into a single facility and add a new church, new middle school, gymnasium, kitchen, restrooms, and support space.

Expansion of the site was impossible, so the new facility needed to fit between the church and school, linking them together. Down the ramp corridor from the entry space are the new classrooms, which allowed the existing school to expand its curriculum to include middle school grades. Further down the corridor are the restrooms, kitchen, and gymnasium. These spaces are organized around a foyer, which during the school days serves as a “commons” and also serves as the informal gathering space for parish activities.

This project received the “M” Award from the Kentuckiana Masonry Institute, its highest honor award.
