somerset community college, laurel campus
academic technical building

london, ky

The site for this new facility was located adjacent to a lake and on sloped terrain. As a result, the building was placed into the hillside with the main entry on the one-story side. Large expanses of glass enclose a 40-foot high entry atrium which faces toward one of the two lakes on the site. The lower level on the two-story side houses the Student Commons and features extensive use of glass and an adjacent plaza to maximize the dramatic views.

Programmatically, the facility houses both technical and academic functions: Industrial Machine Maintenance, Industrial Electricity, Electronics, Applied Physics, three computer labs, a CAD lab, biology and chemistry labs as well as medical and business training rooms. Cutting-edge computer and video technology is utilized in the three Interactive TV classrooms and the Virtual Library. Student common areas include a grill, dining / recreation area, TV lounge, and a bookstore.
