The design process for the Student Health Facility at the University of Kentucky resulted in a building including four stories of programmed area plus a partial basement and mechanical penthouse. The new facility includes clinical functions such as Primary Care, Gynecology, Nursing/Employee Health, Mental Health, and Prevention. Support areas include Reception, Check-in, Billing, Triage, Pharmacy, and other Administrative support functions. Concepts were planned to reduce student anxiety by providing an aesthetically appealing environment with spacious atrium waiting-reception areas. Offices were placed on the building’s perimeter to optimize natural day light concepts and views, while keeping the non-windowed exam rooms within the facility’s core.
The project received the only Honor Award for Excellence in Architectural Design presented in 2008 by AIA Kentucky. The project was also presented by Omni Architects at the University of Kentucky’s “Big Blue Goes Green; A Sustainable Showcase,” held on October 17, 2007.
